Dear Gavyn Davies,
I was going through some unanswered correspondence when I came across a letter written by you to me on Dec 16, announcing Mark Byford's appointment. I never quite knew why you had written to me at The Independent to tell me this, nor whether you wanted an answer, and as things have taken many dramatic turns since then, I do not suppose any answer of mine would have been sufficient.
I should have written back in due course to say how sorry I was that you and Greg Dyke had had to walk the plank. However, as I have now written a piece for the Independent detailing my bid to become the next Chairman of the BBC, I thought it was only fair that I did write to tell you in turn of what I was up to. If you have any hints on how to become Chairman, please let me know. They will remain my secret.
In case you are a Guardian reader, I enclose a copy of my piece.
